The Virtual Choir is Back — Submissions now Open!

We are excited to announce that submissions are now open to join our next virtual choir! We have so enjoyed sharing your lovely voices with the world, so we had to bring it back for this year’s #MillionsMissing MAY. This year, the song we will be singing is True Colors as performed by Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake in DreamWorks’s Trolls. You have until Friday, April 29th to submit your video. To participate, follow the instructions below…

Instructions for Submission

  1. We recommend that you purchase the sheet music. $5.79 for print, $2.00 for digital. You can also purchase the print version, click print, and once your print window pops open, you can choose to “Save as PDF,” as an alternative way to get a digital copy. This is not a requirement, but the option is there for those of you that find sheet music helpful.
  2. Listen to our reference song performed by Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake.
  3. Wear headphones and record a video of yourself singing along to the song.
  4. Upload your recording to this Google Drive folder.

FAQ

Q: Do I need to purchase the sheet music?

A: No, it is not required but recommended for those who find sheet music helpful.

Q: Do I need to film myself?

A: Yes, you’ll need to record video of yourself singing the song. If you’d like to get an idea of what the end result will look like, check out the video of our Virtual Choir from 2020.

Q: How should I record myself?

A: We recommend filming yourself on your phone. Be sure to film in landscape (phone horizontal), not portrait (phone vertical).

Q: Do I need to wear headphones in the video?

A: Wearing headphones or earbuds is a must. We must only hear your voice in the video. If any of the actual music is picked up in your recording, it will render your submission unusable.

Q: Do I need to sing only one part of the song? Should I be concerned about harmonies?

A: Please sing both parts of the song – you don’t need to worry about harmonies.

If you’d like to follow a visual walkthrough of how to upload your submission, we’ve made an instructional video to guide you through the process. See below:

That’s it—we’ll take care of the rest!

At #MEAction, we believe in the power of artistic expression. Through art, we can put our truth to power, inspire and empower ourselves and others, and make our voices heard around the world. We thank you for being on this journey with us, and we’re with you every step of the way.

We will follow up and remind you before the deadline. Of course, we do not want you to push past your energy envelope. If you cannot meet the deadline, let us know. We will do our best to accommodate your needs.

  1. To clarify what track should we be listening to in our headphones when we record? Should it be only our voice audible in the recording or our voice and the backing track?

    1. Hi, Samantha!

You will have the Karaoke version of True Colors playing in your headphones while you sing along. You should only submit your voice on the recording – no music in the background. We will put the track behind everyone’s vocals after the fact.

Here’s the link to the Karaoke version of True Colors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r10jhGLZbEQ

      Looking forward to your submission!

      1. Thanks! Apoologies for multiple questions… in terms of melody / harmony should we sing either what Anna or Justin sings? Or the top or bottom notes through the whole song? Would it be at all useful to have a melody and harmony recording from the same singer to help balance parts?

Obviously just submitting any sing through is helpful and we all have limited spoons but in terms of if we have bandwidth what is most helpful?

Thanks again and sorry for overthinking.

        1. Hi, Samantha!

Please sing both parts and don’t worry about harmonies.

Thanks so much—I look forward to your submission!

  2. Hi there,
    Keen to do this!
Due to brain fog, I’m musically distractable. Does it matter if we switch a bit between the parts or do a copy of both? Or does it need to be a clean Justin part/ clean Anna part?
    Thanks and kind regards,
    Kate.

    1. Hi, Kate, thanks for your interest!

Please sing both parts, and don’t worry about harmonies. We’ll bring it all together on the back end.

      Looking forward to your submission!

      1. I’ve uploaded two because I fudged some of the words etc and I thought there might be one good one between them. 🤞🤣

  3. I hope to be able to do this.
It would be great next year if we have more than 9 days to complete.

    1. Hi, Billy!

We have extended our deadline by 10 days. The new deadline for submissions is April 29th.

    1. Hi, Andrea!

Yes—people with ME, caregivers, and allies are all welcome to sing.

I look forward to your submission!

    1. Hi, Ragnhild!

Purchasing the sheet music isn’t strictly necessary. We wanted to provide people the option if they find sheet music helpful. You can just sing along to the song if you find that easier.

  4. Will you be putting people’s names onscreen? I would prefer to be anonymous if i am able to participate.

    1. Hi, Eri!

We will not be putting anyone’s name on screen.

Thank you for your interest, and I hope to hear your submission!

    1. Hi, Andrea!

We should be able to work with pretty much anything, but .mp4 or .mov are most common.

          1. Steven Molony

            Hi, Alyssa!

We plan to use everyone who submitted.

            Thanks for your question!

  5. Hi there, just checking – is the deadline definitely passed or are there any extensions?

    1. Hi, Mary!

Yes, the deadline has passed. Unfortunately, we are unable to do any further extensions because our music editor is delivering the final mix today.
