A team of climbers are taking part in a gruelling charity event with the aim of scaling the height of Everest (8,848m) in a single day. As the climbing wall is only 12.5m in height, the team will have to climb it over 708 times to reach their goal and it’s expected to take them between 6 and 9 hours. The Everest Challenge will be a real test of the team’s commitment, strength and endurance. The team would like to let any supporters know that The Everest Challenge will begin at 9am on the 17th of January at Watford Central Leisure Centre, near London, UK.
The event has been organised by Edward Cornes to raise money for ME Research UK, a charity which conducts biomedical research into Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). Edward is raising funds because his brother Ollie has ME, and when he himself suffers from another debilitating disease, ulcerative colitis.
ME is a systemic neuro-immune condition characterized by persistent physical and mental fatigue, which is not alleviated by sleep or rest. Other symptoms include muscular pain, cognitive disturbances, digestive pain, sleeping problems, light sensitivity and psychological difficulties. The effects of ME are devastating enough to leave 25% of patients housebound or bedbound. For moderate to severe patients, living with ME is like living with late-stage cancer, advanced stage AIDS, or congestive heart failure for decades.
The services available to patients with ME are currently very poor as there is limited biomedical research and no access to possible treatments that would prevent the disease from becoming more severe. ME Research UK commission research into the causes and treatment of ME and aims to make a measurable difference to those who suffer from it.

Hope is on the horizon for people with ME in UK, as the charity Invest in ME is developing a centre of excellence for ME, combining translational biomedical research to establish diagnostic tests and treatments for ME, with patient care and education of health and other public service professionals. The centre of excellence is based at world-renowned Norwich Research Park in East Anglia, but in collaboration with clinicians and biomedical researchers at other sites in UK and other countries. The research strategy is underway with studies of the role of the gut microbiome in ME, and on B-cells, prerequisite to a UK clinical trial of rituximab and adding value to the Phase 3 trials in Norway.
