The Treatment Action Group (TAG) was started as a committee within ACT UP and in 1991 became its own independent organization. It worked to both educate patients on the emerging science of HIV/AIDS and to help set policy around scientific research and access to drugs.
One example of this work is this document crafted at the 1989 International Conference on AIDS in Montreal. In it, patients along with researcher allies articulated what was wrong with HIV/AIDS research and how that research might be better directed to help patients. 25 years later, ACT UP released The Atlanta Principles to address serious problems relating to prevention, articulating several steps government agencies could take to prevent new infections.
